Masters of the Universe - A.k.A Filmmakers

ചലച്ചിത്രകാരന്മാരെ വിവിധ രീതിയില്‍ തരാം തിരിക്കാം. അവര്‍ എങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു എന്ന മാനദണ്ഡം ഉപയോഗിച്ചാല്‍ നാല് തരം.

1. മലയാളസിനിമകളില്‍ കൂടി മലയാളസിനിമകളെ മാത്രം കാണുന്നവര്‍.
2. മലയാളസിനിമകളില്‍ കൂടി ലോകസിനിമയെ കാണുന്നവര്‍.
3. ലോകസിനിമകളില്‍ കൂടി മലയാളസിനിമകളെ കാണുന്നവര്‍.
4. ഭാഷക്കോ ദേശത്തിനോ അതീതമായി ചിന്തിക്കുന്നവര്‍.

ഒന്നാം തരത്തില്‍ പെട്ട വര്‍ഗം മണ്‍മറഞ്ഞു പൊയ്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. എണ്പതുകളുടെ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ സിനിമയില്‍ വന്നു ഇപ്പോഴും അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ചില സൂപ്പര്‍-താര സംവിധായകര്‍ ഈ വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ പെടും. രണ്ടാം തരത്തില്‍ പെട്ടവര്‍ തൊണ്ണൂറുകളുടെ അവസാനത്തോടെ സിനിമയില്‍ സജീവമായവരാണ്. ലോകസിനിമകളെ പറ്റി സംസാരിക്കുകയും, ഇപ്പോള്‍ മലയാളസിനിമ ഭരിക്കുന്നത്‌ ഇവരാണെന്നും ഉള്ള വിശ്വാസത്തില്‍ കുളത്തിലെ തവളകളായി ചില സൂപ്പര്‍താരങ്ങള്‍ക്കൊപ്പവും ഇവര്‍ സസുഖം വാഴുന്നു. മൂന്നാം തരത്തില്‍ പെട്ടവര്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ സിനിമ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ ഭരിക്കുന്നു. ലോകസിനിമകളെ പറ്റിയുള്ള പരിജ്ഞാനം മലയാളത്തില്‍ എങ്ങനെ ഉപയോഗിക്കണം എന്ന് അറിയാതെ കുഴയുന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരുടെ ഒരു നിര. നാലാം തരത്തില്‍ പെട്ട ഒരു വിഭാഗം നിലവില്‍ മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഇല്ല. എന്നെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അത് പദ്മരാജന്‍ മാത്രമാണ്.

A Statistical Analysis

ഞാന്‍ അങ്ങനെ പുതിയ സിനിമകള്‍ തിയേറ്ററില്‍ പോയി കാണുന്ന ആളല്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ മോശമായ ഭാഷ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഞാന്‍ ഒരു ചിത്രത്തെയും വ്യക്തിയും വിമര്‍ശിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ഇഷ്ടപെടുന്ന ചിത്രങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് എഴുതാറുണ്ട്. അതും വളരെ വ്യക്തമായി എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് വിവരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് ചെയ്യാറുള്ളത്. ഞാന്‍ എഴുതുന്നത്‌ ഞാന്‍ ഒരു മഹാ സംഭവമാണെന്ന് അറിയിക്കാനാല്ല. രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങള്‍. ഒന്ന്, എനിക്ക് എഴുതാന്‍ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഒരു സിനിമയെ പറ്റി പഠിച്ചു സാങ്കേതികമായി പറയുന്നത്. രണ്ട്, എന്റെ കാഴ്ചപാടുകള്‍ പങ്കിടുന്ന വ്യക്തികള്‍ ധാരാളമായി എന്റെ സുഹൃത് വലയത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അവരതു വായിക്കാന്‍ താല്പര്യപെട്ടിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. എന്തായാലും ഇത്രയും പറഞ്ഞത് ഒരു വ്യക്തി എന്നോട് പക തീര്‍ക്കുന്നത് പോലെ കുറെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തുകൂട്ടുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടാണ്.അവര്‍ ഒരു വിഡ്ഢിയാണ് എന്ന് തെളിയിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലാണ് കാര്യങ്ങളുടെ പോക്ക്.

NB : എനിക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ സ്ത്രീസുഹൃതുക്കള്‍ ആണ്. ആനുപാതികമായി നോക്കിയാല്‍ അപ്പോള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ വിഡ്ഢികളും അതില്‍ ആവുമല്ലോ. അതിലൊരാള്‍. :

Annayum Rasoolum: Romeo & Juliet

Take a linear romance and place it on a very tense premise,thats what Rajiv Ravi does in Annayum Rasoolum. A style, which on many instances reminds us of Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal. But the resemblance ends there. Annayum Rasoolum is heavily structured and grown on the template of Romeo & Juliet. From the title, it follows the pattern with minor and major occasional drifting. But more than adhering to the Shakespearean classic, Rajiv Ravi seems to be inspired from the 1996 Luhrmann version starring Leo Di Caprio. And its clearly not bad inspiration. He pulled it off extremely well and far beyond the expectations I had. ( When Rasool sees Anna lighting candles during the church festival reminds us of the scene where Leo sees Claire through a fish tank during the party. Kunjumon and Claire's mad cousin. Death of a friend and sabbatical at distance. And especially the climax scene) Loved the way Fahad portrayed Rasool. Andrea did a decent job with limited spoken words. The guys who played Abu and Colin did outstanding work being realistic and raw on screen. Sunny Wayne (for sure has great potential) on the other hand, seemed a little misplaced. I didn't get the whole point of him being the narrator. I would've preferred if Hyder was doing the narration. And the voiceover,at times, seemed silly and lacking proper content. Excellent cinematography. Though the scope of the movie was huge, I wasn't impressed with the sound design. Most of the dialogues weren't audible with too much of ambient interference. I didn't have a problem with the lengthy running time, but would've avoided/trimmed down a couple of scenes. An enjoyable experience. A great start for 2013

Nigel Powers: The Dutch Hater

Helplessly observing the cultural terrorism progressing in the nation. Today its Kamal Hassan and tomorrow its definitely gonna be us, who'll be packing their bags. A debate on quality of the work is irrelevant at this juncture but its a definite threat to the society when we are denied the freedom of harmless artistic expression. Another thing that worries me is the bisexual attitude of the commentators. We can easily relate this to Nigel Powers' super hilarious, oxymoronic statement , "There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch."

കുറച്ചു കാലമായുള്ള സംശയം ആണ്. സിനിമകളില്‍ പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മലയാള സിനിമകളില്‍ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന ടെലിഫോണ്‍ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചാണ്. ഒരാള്‍ ഫോണ്‍ എടുക്കുന്നു. "ഹലോ മിസ്റ്റര്‍ മേനോന്‍" എന്നോ "പെരേര" എന്നോ "അബൂബക്കര്‍" എന്നോ പറഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ പിന്നെ പ്രതികരണങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു ഘോഷയാത്ര . ഒരു നിമിഷം പോലും ഇടയിടാതെ "അതെയോ", "ഓഹോ", "എന്നിട്ട്" എന്നിങ്ങനെ തുടങ്ങി "എന്നാല്‍ ശരി" എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു അവസാനിപ്പിക്കും.എന്നിട്ട് തൊട്ടടുത്ത്‌ ആകാംഷയോടെ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ആളോട് മഹാഭാരത നീളമുള്ള സംഭവം വിവരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. ഇനി എന്റെ സംശയം. ഈ മുക്കിനും മൂളലിനും ഇടയില്‍ ഈ കഥ മുഴുവന്‍ ഫോണില്‍ കൂടി അയാള്‍ വിവരിച്ചത് എങ്ങനെ. ഒടുവില്‍ ഉത്തരവും ഞാന്‍ തന്നെ കണ്ടെത്തി. മോര്‍സ് കോഡ്! ഇനി ശ്രദ്ധിക്കു.
സംഭവിച്ചത് ഇതാണ്.

"അതെയോ?".
"ട ട ട ടടടടടടടടടടടട ടട ടട".

Weed Moment #14: Year 2007

You are getting to bed, trying to get some shut eye. You start counting stars, sheeps and b**bs. Finally you boot up the computer and start searching for porn with the nastiest keywords ever possible. The next moment you are asleep. You wakes up in the morning to a million missed calls, messages and pings. And then you realize that you've posted the keywords on Facebook instead of Google Search. Aargh, you semi-sleeping stoned moron!

"തെമ്മാടിയും ആരെയും കൂസാത്തതുമായ നായകന്‍. അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു. തന്റെടിയും കര്‍മ്മനിരതനുമായ ഒരു ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍.അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു. വിവരമില്ലാത്തവനും എന്നാല്‍ കലാകാരനുമായ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന്‍.അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു. സര്‍വവിന്ജ്യാനകൊശവും മറ്റു സകലതിനെയും പുഛവും ആയ ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍. അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു. സ്നേഹനിധികളും പരസ്പരം ചാവാനും കൊല്ലാനും മടിയില്ലാത്ത ഒരച്ഛനും മകനും. അവര്‍ക്കിടയിലേക്ക് ഒരു പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു." മേല്പറഞ്ഞ സിനിമ നിരൂപണ-പരസ്യ വാചകങ്ങളില്‍ "കടന്നു വരുന്നു" എന്ന വാചകത്തോട്‌ കൂടി ഞാന്‍ വായന അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുകയും ആ സിനിമ പൂര്‍ണമായി ഉപേക്ഷികുകയും ചെയുകയാണ് കാലാകാലങ്ങളായി ചെയ്തു വരുന്നത്. പെണ്ണ് കടന്നു വരുന്നു എന്ന അറുപഴഞ്ചന്‍ സങ്കല്‍പം മാറ്റി, പെണ്ണ് നടന്നു വരുന്നു, ഓടി വരുന്നു, ചാടി വരുന്നു, കിടന്നു വരുന്നു, എന്നിങ്ങനെ വ്യത്യസ്തങ്ങളായ പ്രമേയങ്ങള്‍ മലയാള സിനിമ സംവിധായകര്‍ ചിന്തികേണ്ട സമയം അതിക്രമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
