Go Goa Gone - Zombie(Is)land!

Zombies always amused me- not the concept of being an undead myself, but the way popular culture made a salable commodity out of them. Always been an ardent fan of Zombie movies and always was a bit disappointed to watch redundant saree-clad ghosts desperately trying for revenge down here. When I saw the trailer of "Go Goa Gone", was super thrilled to welcome the new genre to the town. "GGG" is not the serious zombie kind, which was indeed a wise decision from the makers. The chosen style is an effective icebreaker, which will ease in the audience to a potential trend. Zombie-Comedy.

Hardik and Luv are roomies, colleagues and major-league stoners (which is revealed in a hilarious opening sequence). To get over his ex-biyaatch-girlfriend, Luv decides to head to Goa with Hardik on their mutual friend Bunny's Volkswagen. They end up in an island accompanied with a Russian mafia drug lord, a hot girl in shorts and a herd of ZOMBIES!

GGG was worth watching in the big screen. It’s hilarious, thoroughly entertaining and beautifully shot. Kunal Khemu really steals the show. Vir Das and Anand Tiwari were equally good with their timing and one-liners. Puja Gupta serves the intended purpose. Saif Ali Khan was a pleasure to watch. I have seen my share of Zom-Coms (including my personal favorites, Shaun of the Dead and ZombieLand) and GGG never let me down. I have heard people commenting about the second half being aimless. For Zombie Movies, the build-up is the most exciting part and then its the usual routine of headshots. Being said that, I think Raj and Krishna did a good job in keeping us smiling till the end credits.

I am giving GGG an 8/10.

Chronicles of a False Identity

ഓർക്കുമ്പോൾ സന്തോഷമാണോ സങ്കടമാണോ എന്ന് തീർച്ചപ്പെടുത്താൻ കഴിയാത്ത ചില സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. വിശദമായി പറയാൻ ഉള്ള പാകത ഇനിയും വന്നിട്ടിലാത്തത് കൊണ്ട് വളരെ ചുരുങ്ങിയ വാക്കുകളിൽ എഴുതാം. 2008. ഏതാണ്ട് രണ്ടാഴ്ചയോളം ആരും തിരിച്ചറിയാതെ, അപരവ്യക്തിത്വവുമായി ഞാൻ ജനിച്ചു വളര്ന്ന നാട്ടിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു വിളിപ്പാടകലെ ഞാൻ ജീവിച്ചു. ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കലും കണ്ടുമുട്ടാൻ ഇടവരാത്ത ചില മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഇടയിൽ അവരിലൊരാളെ പോലെ. അക്കാലത്ത് ഒരു ചെറിയ ലോഡ്ജിലാണ് താമസം.എന്റെ മുറി തുറന്നു പുറത്തേക്കു ഇറങ്ങിയാൽ നാലാം നിലയിലെ വിശാലമായ ഇടനാഴിയാണ്. ഒരു വശം തുറന്നു നെല്പാടങ്ങളെയും മൈതാനങ്ങളെയും അഭിമുഖീകരിചു കാറ്റ് കൊണ്ട് തണുത്തു കിടന്നിരുന്ന ഇടനാഴി. അവിടെ നിന്നാൽ ദൂരെ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന കോളേജ് കാണാം. ഇടനാഴിയുടെ മറുവശത്ത് മുറികളാണ്. തൊട്ടടുത്തമുറിയിൽ കോളേജിലെ ഒരു അധ്യാപകൻ. അന്പതിനോട് അടുത്ത പ്രായം. കണ്ണൂര് ആണ് സ്വദേശം. ഭാര്യയെയും മക്കളെയും നാട്ടിലാക്കി ഇവിടെ വന്നു നില്ക്കുകയാണ്. വൈകുന്നേരങ്ങളിൽ വാടകയ്ക്ക് ഒരു വീടന്വേഷിക്കലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ദിനചര്യ. ചിലരാത്രികളിൽ ഇടനാഴിയിൽ രണ്ടു കല്ലെടുത്ത്‌ വെച്ച് അടുപ്പുണ്ടാക്കി ബിരിയാണി വെക്കുന്നതും കാണാം. ഒരുമിച്ചു ഞങ്ങൾ ബിരിയാണി കഴിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്, ഒരുമിച്ചു വീടന്വേഷികാനും പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വെളുപ്പാൻകാലത്ത് 3 മണിക്കൊക്കെ പൌരാണികമായ ഒരു വി.സി.പി വരാന്തയിൽ എടുത്തു വെച്ച് 'റോമാൻസിംഗ് ദി സ്ടോൻ' എന്ന സിനിമ പലവട്ടം ഒരുമിച്ചിരുന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. എങ്കിലും എന്റെ ശരിയായ പേരോ ജോലിയോ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഒരുപാട്‌ ഓർമ്മകൾ ഈ കാലയളവിനെ ചുറ്റിപറ്റി ഉണ്ട്. എങ്കിലും ഇപ്പൊ ഇത് മാത്രം പറഞ്ഞത്, ആരോ പറഞ്ഞ് ഇന്നലെയറിഞ്ഞു. രണ്ടു വര്ഷം മുൻപ് ആ ഒറ്റമുറിയിൽ തന്നെ കിടന്നു അദ്ദേഹം മരിച്ചു എന്ന്.

Fear

മനസിലെ ഭീതി എന്ന വികാരം എപ്പോഴും ബാല്യകാലത്തെ ചില കാഴ്ചകളും കേൾവികളുമായി ബന്ധപെട്ടതായിരിക്കും.അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ആ വികാരം വളരെ ആപേക്ഷികവും വ്യക്തിനിഷ്ടവും ആണ്. എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്‌ നിങ്ങളെയോ, നിങ്ങളെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്‌ എന്നെയോ ഒരുപക്ഷെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തില്ല. കുട്ടികാലത്തെ ഇരുട്ടിനോടുള്ള ഭയമാണ് വളരുമ്പോ ഇരുട്ടിനെ മാത്രം ചുറ്റുന്ന ഭയാനക ഭാവനകളായി ചിലർക്ക് മാറുന്നത്. ഇരുട്ട് എന്നെ ഒരിക്കലും ഭയപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. നട്ടുച്ചയ്ക്ക് വിജനമായ ഒരു മൈതാനത്തിനു നടുവിലെ ഒരു കുളത്തിലേക്ക്‌ നോക്കി നില്ക്കുന്നത് എന്നെ അതിലേറെ പേടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കുട്ടികാലത്തെ ഒരു ഓർമ അങ്ങനെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാവാം അത്. എന്റെ കുട്ടികാലം കണ്ടു പരിചയിച്ചിട്ടില്ലാത്ത ഒരു സാഹചര്യത്തിലും ഞാൻ ഭയപ്പെടില്ല. വിദേശ പ്രേത സിനിമകൾ എന്നെ നടുക്കാത്തതും എന്നാൽ ബാലചന്ദ്രമേനോന്റെ 'കലിക' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ കട്ടിൽകാലിൽ തളയ്ക്കപെട്ട ദേവിയുടെ ഭാവന എന്റെ പല രാത്രികളിലെ ഉറക്കം നശിപ്പിച്ചതും അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ആവും.

മനുഷ്യനിൽ ഏറ്റവും ശക്തിയുള്ള രണ്ടു വികാരങ്ങള ഉള്ളു. ഭയം, ലൈംഗികത. ബാക്കിയുള്ള വികാരങ്ങളെല്ലാം ഈ രണ്ടു ശക്തികളുടെ വ്യതിയാനങ്ങളാണ്. ഭയം കുട്ടികാലത്ത് തന്നെ രൂപപ്പെടുന്നു, ലൈംഗികത പിന്നീടും.

If dreams could kill

I am walking around a temple.An old one. In fact running in circles, past the huge white pillars with elephants chained on to them. Maybe 10 or 15 , I am not sure. People are all around the place. Kids watching, as the elephants feed themselves with the palm leaves stacked in front of them. I hit the number 8, and then I see, instead of elephants , there are giant black cobras. Standing high as the pillars and looking down at me with those angry eyes. No one was around anymore. I am all alone and trying to imbibe what I am seeing. That sight was beyond me. Beyond what my mind could ever handle. Something that spectacular, scary and dangerously beautiful could easily take the last breath away of me. If dreams could kill, I'd be dead by now.

MindPlay

രാവിലെ സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ ഒരു വാചകം കുറെ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു പിന്നിലേയ്ക്ക് എന്നെ കൊണ്ടുപോയി. പത്തില്‍ പഠിച്ച 'ധര്‍മ്മരാജാ' എന്നാ പുസ്തകമായിരുന്നു വിഷയം. പഠിക്കാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞ് അമ്മ രാവിലെ 5 മണിക്കൊക്കെ എണീപ്പിക്കും. വെളുപ്പാന്‍ കാലത്ത് എഴുന്നേറ്റ് ഇത്ര അത്യാവശ്യമായി പഠിക്കേണ്ടത് എന്താണെന്ന് ഇപ്പോഴും എനിക്ക് പിടി കിട്ടിയിട്ടില്ല. ആ സമയത്ത് ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം "ധര്‍മരാജ" ഒരു സിനിമ പോലെ മനസ്സില്‍ പ്ലേ ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു. തിലകന്‍ മുതല്‍ മിലിന്ദ് സോമന്‍ വരെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ ആവുകയും ശങ്കര്‍ മഹാദേവന്റെ "ഘുല്‍ രഹാ ഹേ സാര മന്‍സല്‍" എന്ന പാട്ട് ഒരു സൌണ്ട് ട്രാക്ക് ആകുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ചൂടാക്കിയ പാത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ദിലീപിനെ ഇടുക. വെന്തു വരുമ്പോള്‍ നളദമയന്തി ചേര്‍ത്ത് ഇളക്കുക. ഒരു അമ്മനടിയെയും വിദേശ വനിതയെയും അല്പം ബിജു മേനോന്‍, കോമഡി നടന്‍ എന്നിവരെയും ചേര്‍ക്കുക. പാകമായി വരുമ്പോള്‍ മുന്‍പ് ആരോ തയാറാക്കി വെച്ചിരുന്ന തമിഴ് സിനിമ ചേര്‍ത്ത് നല്ലതുപോലെ ഇളക്കുക.കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനെയും ബാക്കി വന്ന അമ്മ നടിയും ചേര്‍ക്കാം.അവശ്യം പോലെ ബിജു മേനോന്‍ ചേര്‍ക്കാന്‍ മറക്കരുത്. രണ്ടും കയ്യില്‍ നിന്ന് പോയി കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ സ്പൂണ്‍ ഇട്ടു ഒന്ന് ട്വിസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്യുക.അവശ്യം കഴിഞ്ഞ കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനെ എടുത്തു കളയുക.

Kadal: Review

A R Rahman. No question on his genius but an interesting and widely accepted fact is that his tracks needs to grow on you. Couple of years back, I needed at least 3-5 listenings of a Rahman song to appreciate it and once after that it becomes an all-time favorite. Later I got so used to the concept and now when I hear a Rahman track for the first time, I cheat my mind pretending that its my 5th listening and then the song becomes an Instant classic. This applies to a Maniratnam film as well. Saw 'Kadal' today pretending that its my 5th watch and I loved it. Though we can't say its the best of Ratnam. Gautham Karthik who plays the protagonist, No words kiddo! You nailed it. With his 'will smith' charm, he makes us totally forget that its his first ever screen appearance. Saw Arjun with the same excitement I had when I saw him in 'Gentleman' , 20 years back! Aravind Swamy was perfect for the role. Tulasi Nair did a good job. Personally am not really happy about the climax as I felt the screenplay and the dialogues gradually losing its integrity towards the end. Technically the movie is above the current tamil film standards though Rajeev Menon failed to impress me much with the cinematography. Frame stuttering was irritating especially in the Sea Sequences. I remember him saying he had used an array of various camcorders to shoot 'Kadal' from a Super 35 to a Canon 5D Mark II. But I guess poor integration of shots made it too obvious. Amazing soundtrack by A R Rahman and a wonderful choreography. Watch 'Kadal' only if you are religiously following Maniratnam.
